Cost of living in Gibraltar

The honest version from someone who lives here: day-to-day, Gibraltar costs about the same as London. The big exceptions are tobacco, alcohol and fuel, which are far cheaper. Rent is the hardest part, which is why so many people who work here live in Spain. Here are the real numbers, with sources.

The short version

  • Groceries, eating out, phone, gym: about the same as London, within roughly 15% either way.
  • Rent: about a quarter below London, but well above the rest of the UK and two to three times La Línea.
  • Cigarettes: the legal minimum for a pack of Marlboro is £4.68. In the UK the duty alone is over £10 a pack.
  • Spirits: duty on a 70cl bottle is about €1.54 here against £9.52 in the UK, before VAT.
  • Fuel: about £1.36 a litre for unleaded, against about £1.73 in the UK and €1.73 in Spain.
  • Electricity: about 17.7p a unit, against the UK cap of 26.32p.

Everyday prices: close to London

Gibraltar imports almost everything, much of it from the UK, and supermarkets like Morrisons stock the same brands. So prices end up close to London's, not to Spain's. The crowd-sourced data agrees, with one wrinkle: Numbeo has groceries about 14% cheaper in Gibraltar than London, while MyLifeElsewhere has them about 16% dearer. In practice that means roughly the same.

There's no VAT in Gibraltar. Since 15 July 2026, though, most goods carry a 15% Transaction Tax, charged on the import cost, not the shelf price. Food and non-alcoholic drinks are zero-rated, and services aren't taxed at all, so the weekly shop and a meal out don't carry it. Official inflation was 2.5% in the year to April 2026. Rent: the biggest cost

By area, a local letting agent's 2026 figures put a studio in Town or Upper Town at £800 to £1,100 a month and a two-bed at £1,400 to £2,000. In Ocean Village a two-bed is £2,000 to £3,000.

Put that next to a salary. On £30,000 a year you take home about £1,866 a month after tax and social insurance, so an average one-bed outside the centre would take around two thirds of it. On £45,000 you take home about £2,791. That's why so many people who work in Gibraltar rent in La Línea, a walk from the frontier, where a one-bed costs around €570 to €650. Tobacco: much cheaper, but no longer rock-bottom

Cigarettes are where Gibraltar differs most from the UK. But the treaty that took effect on 15 July 2026 changed the rules, and prices jumped that day.

Gibraltar, Marlboro (Mid-High)at least £4.68Legal minimum since 15 July 2026

UK, average pack£16.60ONS, January 2025 (before two duty rises)
UK, duty aloneabout £10.38Minimum excise from 1 October 2026, before VAT

Selling below the minimum price is a criminal offence. Before July 2026 the Marlboro minimum was £3.80, and £3.20 a year earlier. Under the treaty, Gibraltar prices must now sit close to Spain's: no more than 80 euro cents or 15% below the Spanish price, whichever gap is smaller. They're still a fraction of UK prices, but the gap with Spain has closed.

Taking cigarettes into Spain: if you live or work within 15 km of the frontier, Spain allows you 80 cigarettes. Other travellers can take 200. Spain says these allowances will end three years after the treaty took effect, and anything above them has to be declared.

Alcohol: far cheaper than the UK

Since the treaty, Gibraltar charges the EU minimum duty on alcohol: €550 per hectolitre of pure alcohol on spirits, which is about €1.54 on a 70cl bottle of 40% gin or whisky. The UK charges £9.52 on the same bottle, plus 20% VAT. Wine pays no duty at all here. The 15% Transaction Tax is added on top, but a bottle of spirits still costs a lot less than in the UK.

At the bar, Numbeo puts a pint in a Gibraltar restaurant at about £4, against £7 in London and about £5.50 across the UK on average.

Gibraltar charges fuel duty of 14p a litre, half the rate first proposed in 2026. That's why you see Spanish cars queueing at Gibraltar petrol stations.

Household bills

  • Electricity: 11.9p a unit plus a 5.8p cost adjustment, about 17.7p in total, with a standing charge and a £1 weekly meter levy (Gibraltar Electricity Authority, from August 2026). The UK price cap for October to December 2026 is 26.32p per kWh.
  • Water: AquaGib charges 28.9p per 100 litres for the first 4,500 litres a month, then 71.9p, with a £3.48 monthly standing charge.
  • Mobile: Gibtelecom monthly plans start at £20 for 50GB, more than the cheapest UK deals.
  • Broadband: pricier than the UK. Gibtelecom bundles of broadband, TV and mobile run from about £65 to £85 a month.
  • Property rates: instead of council tax, occupiers pay general rates to Land Property Services.
  • Healthcare: no separate bill. Your social insurance contributions (10% of pay, capped) cover GP and hospital care under the Group Practice Medical Scheme.

Families

Childcare is one area where Gibraltar is much cheaper than London. Numbeo puts private full-day preschool at about £842 a month, against £2,174 in London. Government nursery places are open to parents ordinarily resident in Gibraltar, with enrolment each spring. Private international primary schools cost around £16,000 a year.

So is Gibraltar expensive?

If you're coming from London, prices will feel familiar, rent will feel slightly better, and nights out, fuel and tobacco will feel cheap. If you're coming from anywhere else in the UK, everyday costs and especially rent will feel high, and the tax picture depends on your salary (see Gibraltar tax rates). If you're coming from Spain, everything except fuel, tobacco and spirits costs more, which is why living in La Línea and working in Gibraltar is so common. Our frontier workers guide explains how that works.

The Gibraltar pound, which is worth exactly one pound sterling. UK notes and coins are accepted everywhere. Many shops also take euros, but usually at a worse exchange rate than paying by card.
