How hiring works in maritime & shipping

The Port Authority licenses port operations, and its Maritime Directory lists port service companies by category, including bunkering operators, ship agents, ship repairers, tug services, stevedores and training providers. Use it as your target list.

Bunkering is the port's main activity. Fuel is usually delivered by barge to ships at anchor in the bay, under the Government's Bunkering Code of Practice, and the Port Authority's Bunkering Superintendents monitor every operation.

The new Maritime Apprenticeship, run with the University of Gibraltar, the Port Authority and Gibraltar Maritime Services, combines six months of paid work with STCW Basic Safety Training. It is open to people aged 16 and over who meet the Government scheme's eligibility rules, and includes a medical and enhanced vetting.

Gibdock, a ship repair yard, lists vacancies such as commercial estimator and ship repair manager on its own careers page.

The Gibraltar Maritime Administration runs the ship and yacht registers. Gibraltar has held Category 1 Red Ensign status since 1997, so it can register vessels of any type and tonnage.
